The Old Mill
It’s been an institution not only in Blyth, but in Huron County and the Canadian leather industry at large for 61 years: The Old Mill, just south of Blyth.
Owner Glenyce Snell says she started the business downtown selling socks and blankets made of the softest wool with The Old Mill label, eventually branching out on her own and building the impressive complex south of town on Highway 4.
She’s not alone in the business. This is a true family affair, with her husband and son Frank tanning the leathers at their business Atlas Tanning and selling them at The Old Mill.
If shopping for a leather coat, this is the place to go. The Old Mill brand covers many styles, from classic to vintage. Another popular item is the vintage sweatshirt that seems to be making its way into collectors’ wardrobes.
Area residents also know The Old Mill is the spot to pick up a sheepskin, tanned on site. And nothing, not even heated seats, beats a sheepskin covering the car seat on a blustery winter day or having a fluffy sheepskin covering hardwood floors bedside.
Need a cozy pair of moccasins? It’s also the spot for purchasing moccasins in Huron County in various styles – lined with rabbit fur for cold Huron County winters or unlined for summertime wandering in Huron County, and both styles are available with beaded decoration or plain. With the holidays coming, these would make great gifts for friends and family.
Alongside the leather collection, daughter Amanda has expanded the retail collection to include clothing that Amanda says “you can’t find in a mall”. It’s more than just fashion on this side of the shop. She emphasizes the personal shopping experience shoppers have come to associate with The Old Mill. “We like to help our customers. We want them to find the perfect jeans [for example], depending on what their vibe is.”
More like a one-stop shopping destination than a mall experience, Amanda points out that the collection ranges from lounge wear to footwear, and even carrying bridal wear, including wedding dresses. In spring, The Old Mill is a hotspot for shopping for prom and graduation.
As the cold weather sets in, the glove selection is second-to-none: leather, suede, lined, fitted. The styles here are wide-ranging and well priced. “We have prices for everyone,” exclaims Amanda proudly.
