The Livery

One of the most successful and enduring theatres in Huron County is the Livery Theatre, located in Goderich, owned and operated by the Goderich Little Theatre. And, unlike many theatres in the area, the Livery keeps its programming strong and consistent throughout the winter months.

According to local records, the rear portion of the Livery Theatre was first constructed in the 1840s as a harness shop. Two more sections would be added to the building by the 1870s, but generations later it would be turned into the area’s first local car dealership.

In the late 1970s, the building was due to be demolished, but Goderich Town Council recognized the historical importance of the Livery and held off on the demolition to allow the private sale of the building. With the help of a local architect, the building was soon converted into a theatre.

The Goderich Little Theatre, a non-profit corporation, would soon buy the building in 1983.
