Klopp Woodland Trail

 

In between the farmland and villages of Hensall and Zurich, before the lake spans before your eyes, there’s a small trail – The Klopp Woodland Trail – perfect for stretching your legs and escaping into nature for a moment.

The easy one-kilometre route loops through the wooded land on the Hay Swamp, running alongside the Zurich-Hensall Road, otherwise known as Highway 84. The route, which meanders its way through the deciduous trees and through wetlands, is ideal for families. Pets on leashes are welcome.

The route can be followed in either direction from the memorial gardens at the entrance. You should allow between 30 to 45 minutes to complete both the larger route and the smaller route that passes through more coniferous forests. 

While wandering, don’t forget to look around. The area is home to heron, geese and don’t be surprised to see some busy beavers – it is a wooded area after all.  In the wetlands, it’s not uncommon to find fish and mussel species, some of which are endangered. 

The trail is part of the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority’s area, with the Hay Swamp expanding 13 kilometres long and two kilometres wide and extending across Bluewater and South Huron. The swamp plays an important role in the Ausable River drainage system, including flood management and water quality in the river system. 

Given the presence of deer in the vicinity, hunting passes are provided for an annual fee. 

To find the Woodland, look for a large wooden sign with wagon wheels indicating Klopp Commemorative Woods. From here, the road leads into the parking lot where the trail begins just steps away. 

While no map of the route is posted, the natural trail surfaces make it easy to follow the trail. Given its location roadside, expect some traffic noise from the busy road nearby while walking. County Rd. #84 between Parr Line and Babylon Line, north side of the road.
