Falls Reserve Conservation Area

 

A little treasure of natural delights is to be found at the Benmiller Falls Reserve Conservation Area. Great for both day trips and overnight camping, there is much to explore along the banks of the Maitland River. The park is accessible year round and in the winter it is a great spot for a bit of cross-country skiing. 

 

The 230-acre property is nestled in a deep bend in the Maitland River and the shallow cascading waterfalls have long been a favourite swimming spot for tourists and locals alike. But there is much more to see and do. A fishing pond is open seasonally (check for dates), and there are horseshoe pits, beach volleyball courts and picnic areas with shelters. Keep your eyes open and binoculars ready for there are lots of birds and wildlife about. 

 

The well-marked Maitland Trail covers a 3.5-kilometre loop and is suitable for all skill levels. There are also a number of shorter trails and paths throughout the park. You can bring your dog as long as it is kept on a leash. A yearly membership pass allows daily access for one year from date of purchase, or a day use entry fee is required. 

 

Overnight camping is open from April 16 to Oct. 17 in 2021 and it is best to reserve a spot as camping is expected to be a popular activity this summer. Reservations are now open on the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority website www.mvca.on.ca It is recommended that you read through all the information on the website to prepare for an enjoyable trip.

The current pandemic has cancelled many of the special events usually held at the reserve, but this may change as things begin to reopen, so it is best to check in at the website for the most up-to-date information. Benmiller Falls reserve is located at 80900 Falls Reserve Line.
