Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority

The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) carries the proud distinction of being the first of 36 conservation authorities formed in Ontario. Since 1946, it has been working to deliver programs that deal with protecting the watershed of the Ausable River. In 1972, its jurisdiction was enlarged to include the Bayfield River drainage basin giving it a total area of 2,440 square kilometres to manage local flooding, soil erosion, habitat loss, water supply and water quality.

 

Along with forestry and stewardship, environmental monitoring and implementing conservation strategies, the ABCA is active in education and outreach, working with communities to create awareness for a healthy watershed.

 

ABCA manages 3,635 hectares of conservation lands, including conservation areas. Lands were purchased for conservation reasons, such as soil conservation, floodplain management, forest management, wildlife management, conserving ecosystems and protecting source areas to improve the overall health of water, soil, and living things in the watershed.

 

Secondary uses for these conservation lands are passive recreational uses, such as hiking (where permitted), nature appreciation, fishing, canoeing, cross-country skiing and picnicking. Hunting is permitted on designated properties, but you must obtain an ABCA Conservation Lands Pass. ABCA conservation areas in Huron County include Crediton, Bannockburn, Clinton, Morrison Dam, Zurich and the Linfield Wildlife area.

 

The ABCA, through its board of directors, staff and network of committed volunteers, ensures that our natural resources are protected and nurtured for future generations.
