A Drive on Orchard Line
Linking Goderich and Bayfield and running parallel to Highway 21, Orchard Line shows off its best side during the autumn as the tree canopy turns from vibrant greens to bold oranges, yellows and reds. By October, the corn and bean harvest is underway while the expansive wheat fields lay barren, providing insight into the depth of the fields lining this paved road.
There’s no better road than Orchard Line for feeling autumn vibes in Huron County. We say grab a pumpkin spice latte from one of the nearby cafés and head out on a country drive.
The road takes its name from the orchards that once dotted the line, with only Jim Bell Orchard still operating. Today, in between the fields of crops, little stops along the way make for an interesting country drive. 78802 Orchard Ln, Goderich
Turning south on to Orchard Line from Highway 8, just outside the Town of Goderich limits, the road runs parallel to Highway 21 and the picturesque scenery starts immediately. A quick stop before crossing over the railroad tracks is required to check for oncoming trains before venturing along the road where farmhouses, including a few made of stone, line the road.
Further along, at the intersection of Orchard Line and Tower Line Road, long-horned cattle graze in pastures just off the road, looking picture perfect.
Heading south, the block between Telephone Road and Bayfield Road is a bustling one. The popular Pine Lake Family Campground sits on the corner, with its private lake and nine-hole golf course welcoming campers until mid-October, with some residents residing year-round. 77794 Orchard Line, Bayfield www.pinelake-campground.com
Just steps away is the Bayfield Berry Farm. We highly recommend a stop to stock up on all things apple during the autumn months. There’s regular apple cider for sale, but also blends that include peaches, strawberries and even pears to name a few, with all fruits grown on the farm. The farm is the first fruit wine producer in Huron County and also has a range of ciders, many of which feature its own farm-grown apples. 77697 Orchard Line, Bayfield.
It’s along this stretch of Orchard Line that you’ll want to pop into the Schilbe Family Maple Farm to stock up on pure maple syrup. A small wooden sign at the end of the driveway indicates the exact location. 77340 Orchard Line, Bayfield
Then crossing over Bayfield Road, the colourful tree canopy dotting the road becomes incredibly impressive with its red, orange and yellow hues that continue until reaching Bayfield River Road. It’s here that Orchard Line ends. We suggest popping in to River Road Brewing (just to the right of Orchard Line on River Road) to grab an autumnal brew to take home and to get some photos of a very pretty herd of Highland cattle. 35449 Bayfield River Rd, Bayfield
